Chapter 5

Mabry didn’t even think about how hard the ground was. She didn’t spend any time missing her bed or lamenting the lack of pillows. She had crawled through the root system as he had suggested and the next thing she knew she was asleep. Everything faded; the nightmare of her being kidnapped, the supernatural world she had accidentally stumbled upon, all of it. There was only the black of the back of her eyelids and the trust that Horas would keep her safe and stay within hearing distance as he had promised.

She had no real reason to trust that he would, but she did. He had gotten her out of that cage, had carried her this entire way so far, and was now worrying about her eating. Something niggled at the base of her mind, a thought not quite formed enough to examine yet, but it translated quickly into a kaleidoscope of colored, abstract dreams.

She didn’t even know for sure how long she slept, or what woke her first. She was sleeping… and then there was something, whisper soft and warm against the top of her cheekbone, tracing the bone in it’s curvature down. She exhaled, turning into the familiar, soothing warmth without question, her face nuzzling it like she had her pillow so many Saturday mornings after being allowed to sleep in…

But what she nuzzled was more firm than her pillow, forcing her mind to accept a more semi-conscious state, her brain grappling with her other senses as they all filtered back in one by one. Her body froze, eyes opening slowly to look first at that hand that was curved so near her face. Scar covered, bronzed knuckles rested just against the lower point of her jaw where they had stopped, his hand curled. She should have been afraid, except even without following that arm she knew whose fingers they belonged to if only for the safety she felt with him touching her.

He was back- and with him came a fragrant, rich smell of food, assaulting her sense of smell all at once as she sat bolt upright, scrambling out from between those tree limbs and past Horas where he had been crouched next to them to wake her.

A pile of logs and ashes smoldered a few feet off, the smoke from it only very small plumes that disappeared before they even made it up very far. Sand covered the top of what had once been a fire- and that smell was faint, though she didn’t know how. It was the smell of what had been over the fire that drew her though.

He cooked for me.

Seared meat sat in pieces, her body almost tumbling over top of itself as she crawled rapidly towards it. Her knees almost hit her elbows when she stopped, hunching over the makeshift plate he had made from her and shoving the thickest piece of meat in her mouth. It was like heaven, the warm juices running down her chin as her teeth tore into it.
